The Growing Of Vegetable Plants
A vegetable garden is admittedly a part of any home place that has a good rear area. A purchased vegetable is never the same as one taken from a man's own soil and representing his own effort and solicitude.
It is essential to any satisfaction in vegetable-growing that the soil be rich and thoroughly subdued and fined. The plantation should also be so arranged that the tilling can be done with wheel tools, and, where the space will allow it, with horse tools. The old-time garden bed consumes time and labor, wastes moisture, and is more trouble and expense than it is worth.
Choosing the site. In choosing a garden site, look for a well-drained area. All plants need water, which they take from the soil through their roots. But few plants grow well in soil that is poorly drained and, therefore, always soggy. In such soil, the roots will rot because of inadequate air pockets in the soil. The garden site should also be level or gently sloping. A steep slope is difficult to plant and take for. In addition, water running down the slope may carry away topsoil and seeds.
Selecting the plants. As a novice gardener, select the kinds of plants you like best. But make sure that they are easy to grow and suitable for the climate of your region. You can gain such information by reading gardening books (or Ebooks) and the catalogues of companies that produce seeds and plants. You may also consult an expert, such as a garden supply dealer. Tell the dealer the size of your garden, what type of soil it has, and whether it is shady or well-lit.
Plants differ in how long they live. Annual plants grow and die within one year. Biennial plants live two years. Perennial plants live more than two years. Flower gardens may contain annual, biennial, and perennial plants. Only a few vegetables are perennials. The rest are annuals or biennials. But most biennial vegetables are also grown as annuals-that is, the plants are used for eating within one year.
It is well to place the permanent vegetables, as rhubarb and asparagus, at one side, where they will not interfere with the plowing or tilling. The annual vegetables should be grown on different parts of the area in succeeding years, thus practicing something like a rotation of crops. If radish or cabbage maggots or club-root become thoroughly established in the plantation, omit for a year or more the vegetables on which they live.
Sketching a garden plan on the paper can help you avoid mistakes in planting. After the garden has been planted, the plan will also remind you of what has been planted where. In addition, if you save the dated plans from year to year, they can help you arrange future gardens. In making your sketch, be sure that all the plants will have enough space around them. Different kinds of plants need different amounts of room to grow well. Plan to grow most kinds of vegetable plants in straight rows, which are easy to plant and care for.
